Impact of poverty on education and lack of employment opportunities remain one of the biggest challenges to the Kenyan youth. The FACTS remain that;
- At least 35,000 children in Mombasa do not attend school due to poverty and only 55 per cent make it to secondary school.
- Significant barriers to education include; school fees, uniforms, books and stationaries, sanitary towels, etc.
- Many girls miss an average of 4 days in school every month due to lack of sanitary towels, meaning they fall behind in class and sometimes drop out of school altogether?
- Due to the slow economic growth, corruption, nepotism and demand for experience by potential employers, 67% of youth (ages 15 – 35 years) remain unemployed.
